UAE, Brazil, and Cuba Launch $50 Million Food Security Initiative

United Arab Emirates has announced a tripartite cooperation initiative with the Federal Republic of Brazil and the Republic of Cuba, committing $50 million in food aid to be shipped from Brazil. This initiative was unveiled during the COP28 climate change conference held in Expo City Dubai from November 30 to December 12, 2023, marking a pivotal moment in international efforts to develop resilient food systems and sustainable agriculture while encouraging climate action.

The UAE, through this initiative, aims to provide financial support to enhance the resilience and adaptation of food systems, increase investments in specialized projects for production and distribution, and support healthy, sustainable food systems in collaboration with Brazil and Cuba. Her Excellency Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashimi, Minister of State for International Cooperation, highlighted the initiative’s role in preserving nature and mitigating the impacts of climate change on food producers, emphasizing the shared commitment to addressing critical global challenges and supporting sustainable solutions in food security.

Ambassador Roy Pereira, Director of the Brazilian Cooperation Agency, underscored the mutual dedication of Brazil, the UAE, and Cuba to enhancing cooperation that supports the food security of the Cuban people. The initiative, endorsed by 150 countries during COP28, reflects the UAE’s steadfast commitment to tackling global challenges, promoting sustainability, and renewable energy, and fostering collective action on climate change on both bilateral and multilateral fronts.

As the host nation for the G20, Brazil reaffirms that this joint initiative with the UAE and Cuba is built on the principle of solidarity and aligns with the three pillars of Brazil’s G20 presidency, contributing significantly to enhancing food security as determined by Brazil. This collaboration not only represents a historic international support but also successfully mobilized over $85 billion in financing, launching 11 pledges and declarations during COP28, thereby setting a new benchmark in global efforts towards sustainable food systems and climate action.
