Kuwait’s Emir Dissolves Parliament in Historic Decree

The Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, issued a decree on Thursday, dissolving the National Assembly (Parliament) of Kuwait. The official news agency, KUNA, published the decree, citing the assembly’s breach of constitutional constants and its failure to show due respect to the high office, alongside deliberate use of unregulated, offensive language.

This decision, encapsulated in Decree No. 16 of 2024, follows careful consideration of the Constitution and Article 107, and comes on the heels of recommendations from the Prime Minister, with full backing from the Cabinet. Effective immediately, the decree mandates the Prime Minister and all ministers to enforce its provisions, ensuring its publication in the official gazette. This historic step, signed by Emir Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and Prime Minister Dr. Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, marks a pivotal moment in Kuwait’s governance, underscoring the leadership’s commitment to preserving constitutional integrity and respect within the state’s highest institutions.
